Can you actually see Mt Fuji from Tokyo?

Is it worth planning a whole day trip to Hakone or the Fuji Five Lakes area just for a view, or is a glimpse from the city enough?

You can see it from tall buildings sometimes, but it's often hazy, for a guaranteed classic view, Kawaguchiko lake is worth the early start.
