Train prices in the UK—an absolute nightmare right now?

Had to book a long-distance train journey this week and the cost was truly shocking. Found that driving would have been cheaper even with petrol and parking factored in. Seems like public transport here is becoming completely unaffordable for regular trips. What's your experience been with this?

The fact that driving a big petrol car is cheaper than using public transport, which is supposed to be the better option, is crazy. It really punishes people who don't or can't drive. The whole system feels totally broken right now.
